Before a friend introduced me to the Network Marketing Profession, I knew very little about the industry. What little I thought I knew was based upon ignorant stereotypes and preconceptions.
Knowing what I know now, I wish I was introduced to this business 10-15 years ago.
But everything happens for a reason. And who knows, maybe I wouldn’t have been ready for it in my early 20’s. That’s the funny thing about this business. It’s all about timing.
Let me take you back to when Network Marketing found me…
I was about a month removed from telling my oldest son that he couldn’t play on the travel ice hockey team that he was invited to play on. My wife and I just couldn’t afford it.
My low point as a dad came when I had to look my son in the eyes and tell him that he couldn’t play for a team that he earned a spot on, because we didn’t have the money. I felt like a complete failure!
We have three boys and they all three play ice hockey. Two of them play club soccer and baseball. All of those competitive youth sports are expensive. The cost and expenses of the kids’ sports were increasing way more than our salaries.
The most troubling thing was that when I looked ahead to the following year, I knew that I would be in the same situation. And it was only going to get worse as my other two sons reached the ages of travel teams and more competitive leagues.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be that parent who steals their kid’s dreams because of a lack of money.
I want to be able to encourage my kids that if they want something bad enough, and they work hard enough for it, anything is possible. No goal is out of reach if you believe it’s possible!
But how can I encourage that kind of mindset and behavior on one hand and then, on the other hand, when they actually reach their goals, give them a pat on the back and say, “Great job buddy. I’m really proud of you, but we can’t afford for you to pursue that dream. It’s too expensive. Sorry.”
As fate would have it, about a month later my friend shared a couple of great products with me. He also shared that he was making around $7,000 a month through a side business that involved those products and 70+ others.
I LOVED the products, and the side income he was making definitely got my attention. But I just didn’t see myself in the “sales” business.
I’m not a salesman.
Because I loved the products, I did sign up to become a Distributor with the company so that I could get the products at a discount. The cool thing is that there’s no pressure to sell anything and no minimum orders to place. Since there was no “catch” in signing up, I did.
For a few months, I just bought and used the products at a discount. But the entire time I was also researching the business opportunity with the company. I was very intrigued, and as you know, I needed the money.
The more I researched and learned about the company, the more I liked and wanted to become a part of it. They represented everything I stand for. They honored God and Family. They represented the highest moral character and integrity.
And, to my delight, I learned that they actually don’t want you to be a “salesman.” The people who come into the company and try to be salesmen, fail.
The things the company promoted and trained on were building strong relationships and treating people right. The goal of their Business Builders was to simply help other people learn more when they recognized a need. That’s it. No pressuring people. No slick sales scripts.
That really appealed to me. “I can do that.” I began thinking.
After I did some self-reflecting and more looking into my future, I just realized that if nothing changes, nothing changes. I didn’t want to be in the same position when the next hockey season came around.
I decided that I owed it to my boys, to my wife, and to myself to go for it.
It’s been the best professional decision of my life.
